The pen is smoking because it is used for shooting at the enemy, so just like a real gun or cannon it is smoking from having been used.

Level 1 pics

I have some pics for your viewing pleasure of our first level. It is still under construction, but I thought I would share some of the progress with you. The first level will have Roman archers (Sagittarii) shooting at each other with arrows. Each preceding level will be a progressively more advanced era and soldier or war machine, culminating at the aerial dog fights of WWII. We will have soldiers, ships, cannons, tanks planes through the levels. Also all the units will be as historically realistic and accurate as possible.

Game Idea

Hello, and welcome to our quest to make an entertaining and visually wonderful Xbox360 game!

The way it all started:

We were having a brainstorming session one evening about several different game ideas that we wanted to make. All the ideas were great and we had one in particular we really wanted to make, but it would take a year or two and hundreds of thousands of dollars. We were short on a few hundred thousand, but I could of have looked through the pockets of some jackets I haven't worn for a while (I have found some pretty good surprises in the past that way before). Anyways, we were also thinking that perhaps we should start with a small game that we can make in about 6 months or so. Just to see how good we really are and to garner some recognition after which it would be easier to get funding.

I was playing with my pen and a memory from my childhood was coming back into my mind's eye... I could see it clearly as if it was yesterday. I started to tell of this memory to my partner, Tilan and he recognized this game right away as he used to play it too. I was somewhat surprised, as we are not just from two different countries but of continents as well. Back then there was no internet nor personal computers available yet. In light of this coincidence and fond childhood memories we decided to make it into a computer game, so here is the original game as we played it as children:

It was a war game for two. Having a sheet of paper and taking positions at each end at the length of the paper. Each player then draws their respective units on their side of the sheet, leaving a large empty space in the middle facing the opposite end thus lining up against the enemy. The players draw the same amount of units within their respective area, in whatever order or line-up as they wish. The kind of units drawn is up to the players to decide on. Usually they are some kind of war machines such as tanks, airplanes, warships, spacecraft, etc.

Once everything is drawn, the starting player puts his/her pen’s point on one of the units where he wants to shoot from. This is done by placing the pen standing on its point held by the tip of the index finger on the end. The aim is done by slightly leaning the pen opposite to the way that player wants to shoot. Once aimed, the pen is pressed down and a bit forward towards the target. Due to the angle and the pressure from the index finger on top of the pen, it will “shoot” forwards and will draw a line towards where it was aimed. The line that was created is used to draw the actual trajectory of the projectile by continuing the line in the same angle all the way until it either hits an enemy unit or reaches the edge of the paper. After each shot the other player takes a turn. The game ends when all of the units of one of the players are destroyed before the other.

A simple game but was very entertaining for us as kids because we drew our own armies (every kid loves to draw) and then used them in battle. Our creations waging war against the enemy....
